I posted a few replies to my original question and it's answers on page two
(dated the 15th) but haven't seen anything further. I have tried (in vain) to move the dbx files, including the main "folders.dbx" file, double checked where the shortcut is pointing to, made sure that none of the files are marked as "read only" and in short, tried all that was posted for me as well as seen on the web. Seems this is a huge problem and yet I have not found one message board where people said "Voila, it fixed it!" ... or something like that. Here's another post just like mine: http://www.mcse.ms/archive170-2004-2-431067.html. Also, several of the posts I've found say something about looking in the "Message Store" folder, which is mentioned in my error message too, however, I don't have a folder by that name or even one named "store" on my system at all. Any idea if that could be the problem and if so, what I can do about it? See, at the URL given to me on my first post [http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/probl...ors.htm#crash] it starts off stating: "Close OE and open the store folder in Windows Explorer." Can't open what isn't there! I have even sat and waited while Windows XP supposedly did the lovely little "repair" task listed at the MS Site [http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;Q318378] by typing "sfc /scannow" in the StartRunOpen box -- Nothing changed. Please, help! Suzanne P.S. For those not aware, I am getting the ever growing problem error messages of: "Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x800C012E,3)." Followed by: "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly." |

Don't know what all you've tried but this is what I would check.
Usually this error deals with the Folders.dbx file being corrupt. Now, how to solve it. Best way might be to get OE to where it thinks it's new again. Click on START button. Click on Run type in Regedit and press ENTER This open the Registry Editor where we're going to make a change to trick OE. Click the + sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER A list will expand, click on Identities right click on Identities and select Rename name it Identities.old Now, close Regedit. Start OE. It should start up. It will prompt you for the account information, etc. Check to see if it will run now, if so, post back then we'll work on trying to import the old messages into the new store location. THANK YOU!!
I am so very happy right now, thank heavens I decided to take a chance and repost my problem. You have allowed me to finally start up Outlook Express and I am currently reloading all of my mail accounts and newsgroups. WooHoo! Been at this darned thing now for days with no luck and your simple and constructive assistance was the magic cure/fix. You've been the best thing thus far out of this nightmare of having my five year old hard drive (Dell) go kaput as well as facing the horrors of installing Windows XP ~ LOL! Now, perhaps I'll be able to face whatever else comes along with a smile. Let's hope there won't be anything though, it's been a rough month! Have someone give you a huge hug for me, okay? Now, as for reloading the old folders ... am not sure I want to do that, but in case I decide to, what is the best method for doing so? I certainly will respect the way you mention! Going to bed happily now ![]() Suzanne "DGuess" wrote: Don't know what all you've tried but this is what I would check. Usually this error deals with the Folders.dbx file being corrupt. To import the old messages, first find out the location of the current
message stores (dbx files) Tools | Options | Maintenance tab | Store Folders button. Note the location of the current message stores. Click OK then OK again to close options. Now, Do a search File | Search | All Files and Folders type in *.dbx Note the locations where you find DBX files. One of the folder locations will match the current one, disregard that one and pay attention to any other folders, as those are the locations you want o get to for the import. File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6 | Import mail from an OE6 store directory. Press OK Press Browse Navigate to one of the folders where the old messages are located. Click on it to highlight it the press OK and finish out the import. If you had more than the two locations found in search (the old mesage store and the current one), import those as well by doing the File Import again. If no other locations were found, you're done.
