While moving the location of my e-mail profiles, I accidentally over-wrote
one of them with another. Rather than using a backup that is several weeks old, I would like to recover the lost profile since there are recent messages there that I need. I have used data recovery software (Data Robot Premium) to locate and copy the "lost" profile to another drive but am being unsuccessful importing it back into OE. I can see that the "lost" profile contains the standard OE folders and another set which all have a prefix of $. My recovery software tells me that the $ identifies a deleted file. I have tried removing the $ before importing but nothing imports. Can anyone advise me how to resolve this problem please? Thanks in advance. GeorgeB |

GeorgeB Wished you had posted this before running the other data recovery software, you may have been able to get them back with DBXpress. The bad part about some of the regular data recovery software is the fact that it reads it sector by sector and doesn't follow the crumb trail left behind that OE uses for dbx files. It takes the whole sector and writes that as part of the "recovered" dbx file and part of it may well not be part of the dbx file thus corrupting it beyond recognition by any software. What you may find in the dbx file is parts of other files that were deleted and of course Windows does not delete the file fragments, just puts a space available sign out for any new file that is written. That makes the dbx file unusable. DBXPress reads a drive and looks for lost messages. It doesn't matter if the drive was formatted but it does matter if the space used by the dbx files has been overwritten. You may still be able to recover some of them but the chances are slimmer. Hi,
Imho the most powerful data recovery tools are Active@ Undelete and Uneraser (for pure DOS). They indeed never failed me before. I've used it before and they are really reliable. Give it a try, that should help in a difficult situation. http://www.active-undelete.com/ http://www.uneraser.com/ |
