Default Ng posts won't send immediately

I have OE set to send ng messages immediately. For the last week or so I
have been having trouble sending posts. It puts up an error message saying
too many connections or something like that (error 502 - probably my ISP's
error number). I have dial up.

It puts the message in the outbox, and then when I exit and reenter it tries
to send it, but not always successfully. I just had to exit and reenter
three times to get it to send.

Does this sound like a problem with my ISP, or with OE, and if it could be
OE, do you have any suggestions. Thanks...Pete

Try the following:

Create a new folder and name it OldSent
Move all the messages from the Sent Items folder to the OldSent folder.
Move any messages from the Outbox to the Drafts folder, you can resend them
later.

Tools | Options | Maintenance tab
Press the Store Folders button and note the location of the message stores
(dbx files). Write this down.
Close OE

Open Windows Explorer
Tools | Folder Options | View tab
Select "Show all files....."
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types...."
Click Apply then OK

Now navigate to the folder you wrote down from the Store Folders dialog.

Delete the Outbox.dbx and the Sent Items.dbx files.
This create new (undamaged) and empty folders for OE.

Restart OE and rty to send the messages again.

I already know where the .dbx files are, and keep them on my desktop.

Open Windows Explorer
Tools | Folder Options | View tab
Select "Show all files....."

I already have "everything" unhidden in windows explorer.

Thanks DGuess...It sounds like you think there is some corruption in the
outbox or the sent box or both. I do have oodles of messages in the sent
box, so if they are corrupted then moving them to another location will not
fix the corruption in them - they all seem to read okay when I click them
on.

Are you sure windows will put back the .dbx folders if I delete them. I
know it will not let you delete the outbox or sent box folders in the folder
pane. If I delete them in explorer, wouldn't it also delete them in the
folder pane also. But I guess you are saying windows will put them back. I
get nervous about stuff like that. Also wouldn't I have to reboot for
windows to put them back, or not...Pete

Restart OE and rty to send the messages again.

No, not necessarily. If the message won't move, you found the culprit.

OE has to be closed to do this and actually it's not Windows that put the
files back,it's OE and since Windows doesn't do it, no need for a reboot.

OE has a set of default folders that are created should one be corrupt or
missing, Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Drafts are the folders.,
Offline and Pop3uidl are two additional files witl Folders.dbx recreated
should it be missing and willl resurect the folder structure.

I haven't messed with this program for ten years and not learned something
about it.

DGuess...I also wanted to tell you that I just started getting another error
message when I try to click on my ng's on my ISP's server which may or may
not be related to the "posts not sending" problem. It is the standard "an
unknown response was received in response to a request for information from
the news server localnet.com". I called localnet about my "posts not
sending" problem, and they said no one else has reported any problem like
that. I didn't tell them about the new error message I just mentioned. Now
do you think it is more likely that it is an ISP problem, than the corrupted
sent box we talked about. I could also try removing my localnet account and
adding it back in again, but that will be somewhat of a hassle adding all
the ng's back, etc.

Also, I just found this googling -

I keep getting a 502 error (too many connections) when I try to connect to
the news server. What is this and how do I get rid of it?
a.. Our news provider only allows two simultaneous connections to the news
server. Some news readers (especially Outlook Express) will open up as many
connections as they can, eventually causing this error message to appear. If
you can limit the number of simultaneous connections in your news reader,
limiting the number of connections to two will resolve this problem. If,
however, you are using Outlook Express, the only real resolution is to
switch to a different news reader.
What do you think. My OE always worked okay before...Pete

Default Ng posts won't send immediately

David...Thanks for all your comments. Everything seems to be okay now. I
think it must have been my ISP and their subcontractor (supernews). I have
saved all of your comments and will have them for future reference if need
be :-) ...Pete
