Default change pdf file assoc

I have Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and Adobe Reader 8.1 installed on my pc. In control
panel/ folder options/ file types I have selected pdf files to open with
Adobe Reader 8.1 This will work every time I open a pdf file except
when it's an email attachment, then it opens with Acrobat 5.0.

Why does OE do that? and can I change it?

A number of people have run into the same problem. It seems peculiar
to Acrobat.

OE uses the OPEN action in Windows File Associations. There is nothing
in OE itself. But it seems despite the file associations correctly
pointing to the reader for the OPEN action, the full Acrobat will open
if installed. It seems to be intercepting the open from OE. I've gone
through the registry of several people with this issue and not found any
fix for this issue.

One person found that if the reader is already open in the background
when you open an attachment from OE, the reader gets used.
