Using XP and IE6 I can send text message to anyone or myself but if I add
attachment or in line JPG it will not go out. Server error, been working with my ISP support over one hour with no progress. Anyone see this before and know what's up? Mel |

Could I persuade you to share the error message with us in its entirety?
Please copy and paste it into this thread. If it is in an OE Dialog Box, copy/paste is a little different than normal. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA Left click on it to highlight and then right click to copy and then paste it into this thread. Sure Bruce and thanks.
The outgoing message immediately ends up in the outgoing file folder. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Judging by this, it appears your settings are correct, but double check.
Configuring Outlook Express to Send and Receive using Sonic.net: http://sonic.net/support/ss/windows/...settings.shtml In Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced, move the time-out slider to 5 minutes, as well. Assuming all is well with your settings, do this: (regardless) Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when the option arises. If still no joy, create a new Outbox. Do the following for the Outbox, and if the problem persists, repeat for Sent Items after you move any messages you wish to save to a local folder you create. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Outbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "shakey" shakeyATsonic.net wrote in message ... [Ah, you found your way to an OE-specific newsgroup!]
Troubleshooting error messages that you receive when you are using OL and OE http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813514 Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary: QP Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. /QP http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ shakey wrote: Sure Bruce and thanks. After hours more of testing I find that the TRUE problem is different but
was masked. In fact I can send messages that are under about 80K total size no matter if text or jpgs. Above that approximate size they crash server even if plain txt. Me thinks its phone lines now but going back to ISP help tech again. Will post cure, HOPEFULLY. Thanks again Mel "shakey" shakeyATsonic.net wrote in message ... Did you disable Email Scanning by your anti-virus application?
What are your settings in OE Tools | Accounts | Mail | [account] | Properties | Advanced | Break apart messages larger than...? Is this option checked (enabled)? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ shakey wrote: After hours more of testing I find that the TRUE problem is different but was masked. Also exclude EML files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's anti-virus seems to be causing problems too. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM www.fjsmjs.com Do not reply with email |

It might be related to the MTU size, particularly if you are using a
router.
