Default Rules and ignoring certain posts

Hello,

I have rules to flag newsgroup posts from certain people as Ignore, but I don't
want responses to those posts ignored, which is what's happening now. If an
ignored poster starts a thread, every other post in the thread is ignored. How
can I stop this?

Also, what exactly does "Stop processing more rules" mean? I have it on, on
advice, but I don't know why I need it.

A1.If you've "flagged" certain posters as Ignored via Message | Ignore
Conversation, WYSIWYG. If you "flagged" the poster via Blocked Senders, no
thread should be marked as Ignored.

A2. See:

The rules don't give me a choice on that. What I get is "Mark the message as
watched or ignored" if it satisfies the rules.

If you "flagged" the poster via Blocked
Senders, no thread should be marked as Ignored.

I think I had trouble with Blocked Senders not doing what I wanted before (maybe
deleting messages altogether? - which is a bit drastic and irreversible), which
is why I use rules to set them to ignore.

I'm getting the feeling that I can't do what I want.

Thanks for the links. They'll be useful, but I don't see an explanation of "Stop
processing more rules" there.

WYSIWYG. Delete the "flag" rule and use Blocked Sender instead (or just
ignore 'em).

In OE, marking a message as ignored or watched via a rule does NOT mark
the entire thread (existing or future posts) to also get get similarly
marked. So even if you use a view that hides ignored messages, the
unmarked messages will still show up.

Marking watched or ignored which marks the entire thread that way only
works when you manually tag a particular post within a thread. Doesn't
work that way with rules, though.

It doesn't mark existing replies ignored (using Apply Now), but it does mark
future replies ignored. When I read all new messages in one newsgroup earlier,
the OP of some threads was marked ignored according to the rules, but so was
every other post inside the thread by people who aren't supposed to be ignored.

If it did the same with new posts that it does with existing posts I'd be happy.

So even if you use a view that hides ignored
messages, the unmarked messages will still show up.

Well, rules are working that way for me.

Instead of marking the messages as ignored mark them as read.

So you are effectively saying that a killfile is not necessary or desirable?

Why don't you just KF the people you don't wish to see posts from? If you
don't want to see posts from , create a From rule that
deletes that address and also check Stop processing more rules. Forget about
ignore rules.

Because I occasionally do want to see posts by someone I wat to ignore. Example:
Poster JohnDoe has an annoying style, is too trivial and posts far too much to
put up with his posts, but he's usually on topic. If I delete him I'll still see
replies to him, which is okay, but I might be interested enough in what's said
to want to see the OP now and then, but it's been deleted. I want them marked
Ignored so I can see them if I want, but if I do that all sub-branches are also
marked Ignored when I download the latest posts.

Also, I'm happy to delete spam, but it's possible that a rule I'm using to kill
spam will sometimes inadvertently kill a legitimate poster. Deletion is too
drastic because you can only use it when you're 100% sure you'll never want to
see a post that satisfies the rule, and I would rarely be that sure. Whatever
you do to hide a post should be reversible.
