Default Disappearing mail & mail folders?

Just when I thought everything was going OK I discovered this morning
that 3 mail folders with mail in them had disappeared and so had all
messages in the Sent mail folder ?

I ran my OE Restore program and that restored the folders & most of
the missing mail EXCEPT for mail that was in Sent mail ??? Was
probably close on 500 messages

The icon along side 'Sent Mail' has a minus sign ? Dont recall
noticing it before ??

I found this paragraph in the OE Help site

QUOTE: That can happen if the Sent Items folder is damaged. Move all
messages you might want to keep out of the Sent Items folder and into
another mail folder you create. Close OE, then delete the file Sent
Items.dbx in your Identity's store folder. OE will create a new one
when you re-open OE.

If I did this would it fix the problem ? . No ........... I just
tried it and the minus sign is still there

Many thanks

Bye

A + in front of a folder indicates that it has subfolders that are not
displayed. Click the + to display them in the folder list.

A - in front of a folder indicates that there are subfolders being
displayed (you should see them indented below this folder). Click the -
to collapse the subfolders so that you are back to the + display.

Perhaps your missing messages are in one of the subfolders under the
Sent Items.

Default Disappearing mail & mail folders?

Why it happens:

Recovering the missing data: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx (#2 and #4)

Avoiding Such Corruption in Futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

QP
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
