I have installed AVG 8 on two computers. I used the "Custom" install, and
deselected email scanning during install; as Bruce recommends. I don't
have
any LinkScanner message on either installation. I'd recommend doing as
Bruce
suggests, and reinstall AVG8 without the email scanning module.

Don't you have any mention of LinkScanner on this AVG page?:-

I did a search to see what I could fond out about LinkScanner and if it
should turn off along with e-mail scanning. I could not find a definitive
answer, but apparently a lot of people don't want it running.

One post says there is no option /not/ to opt out of it when installing in
custom mode. Since there is that option for e-mail scanning, I still
recommend you try reinstalling it. We're talking minutes here.

Since you use the program, these search results will mean more to you than
me.

Did you reinstall in custom node as recommended, or just uncheck e-mail

I don't get any pop-up status message. I don't have the e-mail scanner
listed at all; the linkscanner is there, and listed as active.

So...to recap... I have the e-mail scanner listed but ticked inactive and
the linkscanner listed and at the moment ticked as inactive...

TVM for that and very useful...but ref:-
"I've seen several posts in the newsgroups and forums where LinkScanner's
caused browsing to slow to a crawl (and worse). YMMV.

If you've already got AVG Free v8.0 installed, want to keep using it, and
are encountering problems or find that it's slowing down your machine, try
the following: "

....I have no problems as LinkScanner isn't active at the moment on my pc.
However a friend who installed V8 at the same time as me and in the same
manner ie not the custom installation does have LinkScanner ticked as active
and has no apparent problems...no slowing down..etc. ....I've read the AVG
notes and it seems a good thing and so am considering its activation...just
trying to meet up with anyone who might confirm its usefulness' or
otherwise. Thanks

I know I am beating a dead horse here, but if you uninstall AVG and
reinstall it in custom mode, you can uncheck e-mail scanning during the
install and AFAIK, the LinkScanner will still be operative and can still be
turned off if you wish.

I sent you a Google search that went into the plusses and the problems
LinkScanner was causing.

Since many of us don't even use AVG, perhaps you would be better off getting
the information right from the horse's mouth.

I have no clue about its utility, or problems. I use Avast AV on my
computer. That is a relative's computer, and I haven't heard her complain
about any problems.

BTW, when I installed Avast, I did it the same way as I installed AVG8:
Run
"Custom" install, and deslect email scanning. I do not run client side AV
email scanners. Too many problems. I do not use Symantec products (such as
Norton AV). Too many problems. I do not use McAfee products. Too many
problems.

fair enough

about any problems.

As you didn't realise I expect she doesn't realise that she has LinkScanner
active..no problems but I wonder if you/she considers it useful?

I am generally very pleased with AVG - no problems.

I installed link scanner, than uninstalled and reinstalled AVG without it,
because when surfing the net, it was too slow, and used a lot of resources.
