....90% of the time OE takes about a minute to load fully. i get the folder
panels on the left immediately, but the header list and preview windows can take forever. running xp sp2. eset smart security. 10% of the time everything opens instantly. both scenarios happen with nothing else running. |

thanx for that - i've replaced the imagehlp.dll file, and it seems to have
prevented the super-long load times, but it still takes maybe 20 seconds for the right-hand panels to open. i can live with that. "Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM" wrote in message ... If you close OE and then reopen, is it faster the second time? Whether it
is, or isn't, if you haven't already done so............. 1: Do not archive mail in default OE folders, Inbox, Sent Items, etc., as they will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. 2: After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. 3: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 For some programs, turning it off is not enough. You may have to uninstall it and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when offered. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "tim harrison" wrote in message ... thanx for that - i've replaced the imagehlp.dll file, and it seems to have prevented the super-long load times, but it still takes maybe 20 seconds for the right-hand panels to open. i can live with that. thanks for your help. i have used custom folders for many years now. i
rarely compact messages until outlook suggests it. i don't virus scan email but will try an uninstall and customise it to prevent email scanning from the get-go (i know it was on by default when first installed and i had to turn it off manually). will post results when i get a chance...
