Bruce
Wouldn't it help when you deal with this problem to point out that the count is recorded in the Registry. A search on my computer for "Compact Check Count" gets "0x00000014 (20)" This changes to "0x00000015 (21)" on a restart. I am not sure, which is the relevant number. If the user has more than one identity it is necessary to match the guid in the Registry to that recorded for the Store folder in Outlook Express. Steve Cochran has written on this topic and provides a tool for manual compaction etc. http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/Default.aspx I expect you know all this but I thought it was worth a mention if users are seeing the count messed up. -- Regards. It could be something else, but you need to start somewhere. (This /is/ a relatively new bug). After you remove it, compact manually, reboot and compact again. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. "Bobm0001" wrote in message ... I recently installed Windows Desktop Search--I don't remember why, but it was part of something elso I installed. Should I just remove it? "Bruce Hagen" wrote: Have you compacted and still see the prompt? And are you running XP with Service Pack 3 installed? If yes to both, the following may apply. There is a growing number of programs that may be causing this after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following? IBM Rapid Access keyboard. Windows Desktop Search Window Live Mail Mailwasher. Nero. Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3. You could also download RegMon: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896652.aspx. Run the program and monitor the Compact Count Check registry value by filtering on: Compact Count Check. This should identify the program that is causing the rapid increase in the Compact Check Count registry value. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Bobm0001" wrote in message ... For some reason, the "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages" reminder is popping up on my computer within two days of my last compacting. Plus, it doesn't wait until I'm closing out of Outlook. It just pops up and, if I cancel it, pops up again in about three minutes or less. The only change I've made to my system recently is installing as new, much larger hard drive. I can see the value of compacting messages, but this is becoming bothersome. What can I do? |
