Fro more on the key, see:

OE Compacting
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

If you set the key to 0, that will temporarily stop the prompt, until OE
has been opened and closed 100 ore times.

That it keeps coming up indicates that something on your system is
repeatedly opening and closing OE (MSIMN.EXE). To solve the problem,
you need to determine what is causing that.

I've run the REGMON but the only program causing the query is outlook
express. It's very undesirable to compact as this just creates an
entire
backup of any saved emails in another directory; buring up valuable
hard
drive space. This requires a hunt and search thru the Identities
folder to
find these backups and delete them to free up space... or selecting
the
Recycle Bin as the 'store folder' and then going thru a process of
purging it
as it fills up during the process so as to not 'stall' out the 40GB
drive of
the laptop.

So, how do you just turn off the annoying backup/compact message.. or
reset
the counter?

Have you compacted and still see the prompt? And are you running XP
with
Service Pack 3 installed? If yes to both, the following may apply.

There is a growing number of programs that may be causing this after
installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard.
Windows Desktop Search
Window Live Mail
Mailwasher.
Nero.

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls,
especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.

You could also download RegMon:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896652.aspx.

Run the program and monitor the Compact Count Check registry value by
filtering on: Compact Count Check.

This should identify the program that is causing the rapid increase
in the
Compact Check Count registry value.

For some reason, the "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can
compact
messages" reminder is popping up on my computer within two days of
my last
compacting. Plus, it doesn't wait until I'm closing out of
Outlook. It
just
pops up and, if I cancel it, pops up again in about three minutes
or less.

The only change I've made to my system recently is installing as
new, much
larger hard drive.

I can see the value of compacting messages, but this is becoming
bothersome.
What can I do?
