Is it not possible to use Outlook Express 6 or 7 in Vista?
Is one required to use Windows Live Mail as the email and newsgroups reader in Vista? Thanks. DSH |

There is no Outlook Express (OE) 7. That latest version that there is
or ever will be is version 6. Outlook Express cannot be installed or run on Vista. Vista comes with Windows Mail (WM) which was the intended replacement for OE. WM is also coming to an end. Microsoft is no longer doing any significant development with that product. Instead there is now Windows Live Mail (WLM) which runs on XP SP2+ and Vista. WLM is the only free mail/news client that Microsoft intends to do any development on. Of course you are free to use mail/news clients from other vendors. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "D. Spencer Hines" wrote in message ... No Vista for me then until WLM is debugged. I'll stick with XP SP3. I'll bet millions of other folks are doing the same thing -- and that's not good for Microsoft's bottom line. Vista comes with Windows Mail (WM) which was the intended replacement for OE. O.K. WM is also coming to an end. Microsoft is no longer doing any significant development with that product. Windows Dead Mail as compared to Windows Live Mail. Good Progression. Of course you are free to use mail/news clients from other vendors. Thanks for the straight, unvarnished info. My take is that Windows Live Mail wasn't ready when Vista was close
to being ready. So Microsoft quickly tossed Windows Mail into the breech so that they could ship Vista on time. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "D. Spencer Hines" wrote in message ... Why did WM flunk? Windows Dead Mail as compared to Windows Live Mail. Good Progression. |

Was Vista close to being ready in June 2006 when all further development was
stopped? What about the scores of bugs that were posted by private beta participants (all of which were reproducible) that were all close by June 2006 and marked either "Cannot reproduce" or "Will not fix"? Bah! Gary VanderMolen wrote: My take is that Windows Live Mail wasn't ready when Vista was close to being ready. It looks almost the opposite to me. WM was first, a port of OE functionality which would fix the .dbx problem, perhaps using some Vista only services... w But that would have been a Vista only solution to that problem. How could the same enhancement be provided to XP users? So then WLMD would have been an afterthought about how to do that. Then, if the Vista only services that WM was designed for weren't actually available in that OS W, WLMD would be the better solution for Vista too... IMO Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Although I was one of the beta testers, I don't remember the
exact time frame when Vista bugs stopped being fixed, except for so-called 'show stoppers'. I do remember that Windows Mail was thrown into the mix rather late in the beta testing cycle, and very few of its bug reports were responded to in a meaningful fashion. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... People talk about this .dbx problem all the time.
I've never experienced it and I've been using OE for many, many years. I use Norton successfully, update AV daily, and compress OE many times daily. I also backup OE frequently with OE Quick Backup. So, what's this continual whining about "The .DBX Problem"? DSH "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote in message ... "Gary VanderMolen" wrote in message ... That's definitely Bad Rice Writ Large.
'Show Stoppers' is a standard flim-flam term. DSH "Gary VanderMolen" wrote in message ...
