I am setting up a new notebook for my daughter. This is the first
instance of a computer in the family running Windows Vista. My daughter wants her e-mails copied to her laptop. Under Windows XP she was using Outlook. I did some reading on the web and found that the procedure is, in principle, to import messages from Outlook to Outlook Express via the import function of Outlook Express, to transfer the mail directory of Outlook Express to the new computer and import to Windows Mail. The problem is that Outlook Express will import only the messages outside of the archive folder of Outlook. I.e. everything that is in Outlook.pst but nothing that is in archive.pst. But we want to transfer *all* the e-mails. Is there a way short of copying all of the archive back into a non-archive mail folder inside Outlook? (Which would be very tedious, as it appears one cannot copy all the 50 or so folders at once, but has to do so one by one.) -- Klaus Kassner ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Your question should be asked in an Outlook newsgroup.
From Outlook help: On the File menu, click Import and Export. Click Import from another program or file. Click Next. Click Personal Folder File (.pst). Click Next. In the File to import box, change the default file name in the path from backup.pst to the name of the archive file you're importing from. Click Next. Click the folder to import from. If you want, click Include subfolders. Specify how you want Outlook to handle duplicate items. Click Import items into the same folder in, and then click the folders with the same name as the folders you're importing from. Click Finish. -- Ronald Sommer "Klaus Kassner" wrote in message ... You should be able to export in "public" places (like your file system), but not into the structures/folders administered by another program (which could even be running at the moment). Whereas importing into the structures of the program you are running by that program itself is legitimate as long as the structures of the other program are readable by yours -- you don't modify them, after all. -- Klaus Kassner ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

No need to argue with me. The fact remains that you *can* export OE data to
OL and you can export OL data to OE. Likewise, you can import OL data to OE and you can import OE data to OL. (In fact, OL experts recommend that you export OE data to OL for best results.) Your issue is with the archived PST file(s), not the way OE imports the OL data itself. Only an OL expert can help you resolve the issue. No need to argue with me. The fact remains that you *can* export OE data to OL and you can export OL data to OE. First you said, you *believe* this can be done, now you state it as a fact. Here are the choices you get in the import/export dialog of Outlook: Export to a file Import a VCARD file (.vcf) Import an iCalendar or vCalendar file (.vcs) Import from another program or file Import Internet Mail Account Settings Import Internet Mail and Addresses So only *one* export option and that is to an external file, not to an OE folder structure. So there is *no* direct way of exporting to OE, because OE does not store its messages in just a single file. All the others are import options. The third may or may not allow importing from OE. Since I want to get data from Outlook to OE, not the other way round, this is not helpful to me. If things were that easy, I would not need to post here :-) . Likewise, you can import OL data to OE and you can import OE data to OL. (In fact, OL experts recommend that you export OE data to OL for best results.) OE may be able to export to OL, but that is not the direction I need. That OE can import from OL, I know, but I want it to import everything, not just the active folder. (I do not care about the contacts, just the messages.) -- Klaus Kassner ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
