Please help. Attempting to insert image in outgoing email. When I click
'insert' 'picture' then 'browse' to select image, it appears in a set folder and wont allow me to browse additional folders. No options work (except for selecting an image in that folder). If I select one of them, the image appears in the email but the box wont close. Only way out is to control/alt/delete and cancel. Have rebooted, deleted cookies, files (offline as well). Was unable to compact all files - error message saying 'file in use'. All closed and offline and unable to detect what would be in use. Any suggestions for a very aggrivating problem? |

What operating system are you using? What version of Outlook Express as
shown in the Help/About screen. Are you also running some type of antivirus program and have it set to scan incoming/outgoing mail? Have you attempted to alter the source code of your HTML messages to indicate the file path to the desired images? How large is your message store folder? Try compacting while working offline (click File/Work Offline and then follow up with File/Folders/Compact All Folders and let it run to completion without using the computer for any other task. It sounds like some corruption has already taken place in your messaqe store folder. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Hi Jim, thanks for your help. I am using Windows XP version 2002 and Outlook
express 6. Will start with the filter. Yes I do have a spam filter, but I love it. In the past 466 emails, 319 or 68% have been spam. How big of a problem is this. I understand that they system will look after itself, but I really don't want to have to deal with this mass spam that finds its way to my inbox. Each time I set up a site, or register in a forum I get more. Re source code, I can select any image within the drop box that opens up, so altering the source code will let me put an alternate picture in, but it still wont close the 'picture drop box' (the problem is that the box won't close without cancelling no matter what I do). Also, the secondary 'Picture drop box' (the one that appears whilst browsing) has the same problem. It will let me select an image from the chosen file, but if I try a function key such as cancel it wont work either, leaving me the only option of selecting an image from that box or cancelling (selecting the image puts the appropriate html for that image, but when I insert it into the email, the original 'picture drop box' wont cancel). Vicious circle. Not sure how large my store folder is, but I don't have a lot of emails on my system. The two major things noted however are (1) I recently uploaded my address book with up to 500 email addresses for my work newsletter (2) I was getting notices to compact but ignored them as I wasn't sure about that process (silly me). Now I can't compact due to a error message saying file in use (but I was offline with all programs and files closed so don't know why this is occuring). On other occasions it didn't give me an error, but simple went through a 5 second read of files, didn't bug out, but did nothing more??? I don't think it compacted the files??? Do you see any evidence of this function as it is working? When I tried it again within a few minutes I got the error message??? If it is the suggested curruption in the message store folder, do you know a fix for this. Many thanks for your assistance, I have searched long and hard for a fix without any luck. Thanks - Johnno. Open Outlook Express and click Tools/Options/Maintenance and then click
Store Folder button to determine the location of your message store folder. Write that path down. Close Outlook Express and open Windows Explorer (WinKey+E) and navigate to the file path you wrote down and look at the size of the DBX files in the folder (if running Windows 2000/XP, the DBX files are hidden by the operating sytem so you will have alter Explorer's behaviour to allow hidden files to be displayed). If you find any DBX files that are more than 100 MB in size, they may be corrupt. If you find any DBX files that have a number appended, such as Inbox(1).dbx, Sent Items(1).dbx, etc. then corruption has already happened. Try creating a new identity, switch to it and set up your mail accounts in the new identity, then use the menu File/Import/Messages, selecting From an Identity and try to import your old mail from the problem identity. Keep your message store folder size under control by limiting the size of the default folder to 100MB, creating "new" local folders if need be to contain older messages that you believe "must" be archived. After moving or deleting messages, take the time to compact your message store and only do so while working Offline (File/Work Offline) so that the compacting is not interrupted by a polling for new messages since many users poll for new messages excessively (every 30-50 minutes is more than enough for an average user). When you complete those things, post back and let us know if the problem has been fixed. Good luck. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Thanks. Hi Jim, thanks a lot for your assistance however these work arounds didn't
work either. I checked the files in outlook. The largest DBX file was 26MB and none had any variations such as the (1) suggested. I created a new identity and switched to it however the same problem occurred in this identity. Don't you just hate computers some times. If you have any other suggestions it would be greatly appreciated (it doesn't look like this will be a simple fix). Thanks again - Johnno. Only thing I can think of is to visit the Windows Update page and download
and install any updates for your operating system marked as Critical. It's possible that you are missing something that has been fixed in an update. The not being able to compact the message store is a serious concern. How much time are you allowing for the compacting operation to complete? Are you getting any error message or are you just shutting down the computer to interrupt the process (which almost guarantees you will have a corrupted store folder). For more on corruption, see the info he The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 "Johnno" wrote in message ...
