Default on some msgs.. instead of pic. i there are boxes w/red check mark

Can someone please tell me why on some e-mail msgs., there are little boxes
with a red check instead of the pictures.. On some you can click the x and
you go to the net.. others nothing happens.. Is there some setting I'm
missing?
Also.. what is the diff between HTML and Plain text??
Thank you in advance for any input..

There are a few possibilities. Some are on the sender's end, and some may be
on your end.

See these links for information:

If clicking on the x takes you to the Internet, then the sender never sent
an actual picture.
