Default Can't Display .eml in Outlook Express and Printer Issues

Hi,

This is a stumper. It may have something to do with Automatic Upgrades, but
I haven't found the connection yet.

The problem: The PC is a Intel Quad processor, 4 Gig memory, using 64-bit
XP Pro. I am running Bitdefender Internet Security and Prevx 2.0. The PC
was re-loaded a few months ago because I had an issue that was similar to
this. About 3 weeks ago Outlook Express stopped displaying received .eml
messages or some messages that have HTML. It displays text. In some cases a
document will be received with photos inline. When forwarded, the received
message does not have the photos inline.

Also, right in the middle of this I discovered that I can't print to my
network printer. I have reloaded the drivers---but this didn't help. The
printer appears to be installed---the document go to "printing", but nothing
happens. I can print OK from other PC's.

In addition, I have files that are shared between PC's in the Workgroup. I
can't see the other PC and it can't see me.

I have looked everywhere in the networking and security---can't find
anything that looks funny. Checked the Web and looked here for
help----nothing so far. Looked at the settings in Bitdefender and
Prevx-----looks fine.

My gut is telling me that something is coming down in the updates that is
blocking the network somehow. I had a lot of updates around the time this
happened, but not that sure as it was not brought to my attention until later.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We'll deal with the EML issues in this newsgroup.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3).

Is Automatic Updates enabled
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow...ndowsxp.mspx)?

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | select CUSTOM & scan: If any
updates are offered, can you install them successfully?

= NB: Please do NOT install IE7 or WinXP SP3 at this point, if they're
not already installed!

OE Tools | Options | Read | Read all messages in plain text = is this
option enabled?

OE Tools | Options | Security | Block images and... = is this option
enabled?

...In some cases
a document will be received with photos inline. When forwarded, the
received message does not have the photos inline.

OE Tools | Options | Send | Mail Sending Format | HTML | Include pix with

Default Can't Display .eml in Outlook Express and Printer Issues

For your printing/network issues, post in an appropriate newsgroup for
your version of Windows, such as
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...xp.network_web
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...wsxp.print_fax

Now for your OE problems.

I'm not exactly clear on what you are seeing, but I'll cover some
related issues.

If HTML messages are displaying just plain text, then Tools, Options,
Read, Uncheck Read all messages in plain text.

If OE us unable to open an EML file, then see:
OLEXP: Unable to Open EML File Attachments in Outlook Express
(Fixing the EML File Association)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312355
If the abbreviated command in the above article doesn't work,
then try: Start, Run and enter the following (with the quotation marks):
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

For pictures getting lost on forwarding:
Tools, Options, Send, Mail HTML Settings, Send Pictures

Mike,

I included the printing issue with this one because I think they are related
in some way.

if you see my previous reply, everything looks good. I checked all these
things and more prior to asking for help. I had an issue about 2 months ago
where MS Money suddenly decided not to load. Auto updates was also not
working at that time. I went through all kinds of trouble shooting including
help from Microsoft before I finally through in the towel and did a wipe and
install. At that time I felt it had to do with something from the auto
updates---but could not prove it. This is the new load that started having
trouble when a lot of updates were coming down about 3 weeks ago. Nothing
was added or changed to the PC before or during the issue.

Which two updates failed to install, Rich?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed ?

Default Can't Display .eml in Outlook Express and Printer Issues

Hi,

(A) Sorry, I should have included system specs:

PC: XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard
Memory: 4 Gig
Processor: Intel Quad
Video: Diamond Radeon 1650
Virus: Bitdefender Internet Security '09 - Current
Maulwa Prevx 2.0 - Current
System: MS XP Pro, 64-Bit
Internet Explorer 7 - current
Drive: WD SATA 139G

(B) I just selected 2 short ones for testing;

"Security Update for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB951698)
A security issue has been identified in Microsoft DirectShow......."

"Security Update for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB943460)
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise"

(C) Defender is not active. See above for the other two that are running.
they were not running when windows was installed. Firewall is by
Bitdefender, MS Firewall is off. They are, of course, active when I am on
the network and when something is downloaded. As I am using auto update,
they were active when the files were auto downloaded and auto installed.
They were also active when I tried the two files.

(D) I had an issue a few months ago where MS Money all of a sudden decided
it would not load. I did uninstalls and reinstalls, worked with MS Support,
who also suggested try a temporary new identity---it didn't work. Upon
investigation, I also discovered auto updates were failing as they are now.

You have suggested some other things to try, and i will. I'll be back with
the results.

GRRRRRR.....

I just ran some test files (I am storing the mail on the server, not
deleting---until problem is fixed) to the account that is having trouble, and
my account with a different mail program for testing (Thunderbird). THE
FILE CAME DOWN OK!!!! The attachment displayed as a wav file, not a .eml
file on both accounts. I still have the original file that came down as an
..eml for comparison. I am pulling out my hair (what is left of it!)! I have
a lot of testing---will get back to you.

Thanks,

------

Default Can't Display .eml in Outlook Express and Printer Issues

Well, we've certainly gone far off-topic here ("Can't Display .eml in
Outlook Express and Printer Issues") unless you're seeing the same behavior
in a new identity.

That being said and considering that (1) you "re-loaded a few months ago"
and that (2) no updates have installed successfully since then, CrystalBall©
sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

This is a stumper. It may have something to do with Automatic
Upgrades,
but
I haven't found the connection yet.

The problem: The PC is a Intel Quad processor, 4 Gig memory, using
64-bit
XP Pro. I am running Bitdefender Internet Security and Prevx 2.0.
The
PC
was re-loaded a few months ago because I had an issue that was similar
to
this. About 3 weeks ago Outlook Express stopped displaying received
.eml
messages or some messages that have HTML. It displays text. In some
cases
a document will be received with photos inline. When forwarded, the
received message does not have the photos inline.

My gut is telling me that something is coming down in the updates that
is
blocking the network somehow. I had a lot of updates around the time
this
happened, but not that sure as it was not brought to my attention
until
later.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
