tried using the 'file' 'import' function in oe6 but have no idea where to
browse to find the folder where my messages are stored. afraid if i simply set up a new mail account, i will lose all the saved emails and addresses that i had but for i updated to the new version. strangely, if i log off and switch user to my brother's side of the computer, all his emails and everything came thru the update just fine. any thoughts on how to get all my old emails back? |

I'm not really clear what your problem is. In OE, Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will show you where the message data files are stored. These are *.dbx files and there is one for each OE folder plus some other essential files for OE's use. On Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3 they are hidden files and yu will have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View). While there it's a good idea to uncheck the box to hide extensions for known file types. For more help please give us your Windows version and your full OE version (e.g. 6.00.2800.1106). Also describe better what you are trying to do. This site may be appropriate: http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM Please respond in Newsgroup. 3 things.
1 - You criticized me for accidentally posting the same message twice. Sorry for that but if i can't even get the posting part right, you can imagine how frustrating the rest of this process is. I don't know computers. Please bear with me. 2 - I went to the dts-l.org page about "good posting" and again, if I knew all the technical stuff and computer jargon, I probably wouldn't need the help for which I am asking. I don't speak technobabble, I am a computer illiterate. I'm doing my best. 3 - My actual problem. Logged into Outlook like I have done 1,000 times and it informed me that a new version was available. Would I like to update? I clicked yes and the new version OE6 installed itself. Problem was all my old saved emails (and folders) and address book disappeared after the new update. Where did they go and how do I get them back? All the new version wants me to do is to have me log in as (or set up) a new user. If I do this with my email address and server info, I am afraid it will prohibit me from accessing all old/archived emails, folders, address book, etc. that I do not want to lose. How can I make the new version update all my email stuff with the old, saved messages and folders. That's my problem. Please help a luddite out. Thanks. You might want to just click on this link and see if it helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/directo...;EN-US;q313055 If not, we do need some basic information. What is your operating system? (Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me, XP, etc.) What version of Outlook Express is shown in the Help/About screen in Outlook Express? We can often figure some of these things out if you use your newsreader in Outlook Express to pose a question but when you resort to the abominable web interface, we have no idea unless you tell us, since the crystal balls they issue to fortune tellers and others people like that do not work well for us. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. One of things you should always state in posts to the newsgroups is your Windows version. You've gotta give us the tools to work with.
Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of your current Identity's store (http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down. In WindowsXP and 2000, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options View. In Windows Explorer, search for .DBX files. Any found which are not located in your current store will most likely be those from your OE5 Identity. You can Import them using FileImportMessages.... If, by chance, you upgraded from IE/OE4 (again, if we knew your Windows version...): In Windows Explorer, search for .MBX and .IDX files. These are the old OE4 files. Follow these steps to import the data into OE6: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE4 References: Backup & Restore OE Data http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx OE Files & Settings http://www.insideoe.com/files/index.htm OE Registry Keys http://www.insideoe.com/files/regkeys.htm Importing OE Data (all DBX files, including Folders.dbx) http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5 Importing a single DBX file http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importdbx http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx (last paragraph) -- ~PA Bear scott77777 wrote: 3 things. 1 - You criticized me for accidentally posting the same message twice.
