Like many others I began having problems with OE6 back in October; I turned
the computer off one night and the next morning found that OE had decided to reinstall itself and I had a brand spankin' new email program. Unfortunately all my saved email folders and address book disappeared too. I know the folders are here but nothing I've tried will open them - I bought RecoverMyFiles, I've tried every tree, trail and fix I could find but the only success I've had was thanks to the gentleman in this group who advised doing a "find person" search using only @ as a qualifier. My addresses showed up but still wouldn't synch or transfer, I had to do it manually. I can get to the stored folders, I just can't move anything to me and clicking on a folder takes me back to my current OE. Anyone have success yet accessing their own "lost" OE folders? I could really use some help; I hate to take the whole unit (Dell Inspiron 'bout 1 1/2 years old) to my neighborhood geek shop. I know they'd be careful, but still - it's not their email they'd lose! Sigh. Didn't Dell used to be a quality seller? Crossing my fingers and thanks in advance! Dee |

The OE data files are .dbx files and they are hidden files.
OE would look 'new' if you opened a new Windows user or a new OE Identity. Do not open .dbx files. Doing so will corrupt the file and make it unuseable. File, Import, Messages, OE6, select Import from OE store directory, browse to the location. If folders.dbx is not in the folder, then you can import single folders. Create a new folder in OE, call it Restore. Close OE. Go to the OE store folder and delete restore.dbx. Copy a dbx file from the old OE folder into the current OE store folder. Rename the dbx file to restore.dbx . Open OE. -- Ronald Sommer "December" wrote in message ... Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced
Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. Enter Windows Explorer. Search My Computer drive with "*.dbx" without quotes as the search criteria That should reveal all files and where they are if they are still there. http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone -- Hope this helps. Its possible OE just reinitialized a new message store and the older one is
still there. Search for *.dbx (hidden so you have to enable showing hidden files and also perform an advanced search to include hidden files) and see if you get multiple directories and check the dates of the files on them to see. I carried out an "Import" procedure from OE6 store Directory by browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{8E462109-3BE4-4456-BE4A-7BF26A776F08}\Microsoft\Outlook Express and for the Address Book import browse to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book. |
