Default Paper Clip When There Is No Attachment In IE6

A friend's email to me always shows a paper clip even though there is no
attachment to the message. Emails from others don't show a paper clip on
messages without attachments.

Would someone please suggest what might be causing this to happen?

Thank you.

Either your friend is reading in Plain Text and the e-mail contains HTML, or
they are using AVG (a good program) and have e-mail scanning enabled.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently.

Default Paper Clip When There Is No Attachment In IE6

Thanks Bruce

Sorry, but I didn't make myself clear. The email in question is not being
read by my friend but is being sent to me by her. As far as I can tell, it
is in plain text and contains no HTML. I don't know what she anti virus
program she uses. I do use AVG with email scanning enabled. Only messages
from her show the paper clip when there is no attachment to the message.

I really don't want to turn of my email scanning. Isn't that one of the
purposes of having an AV program?

Thanks again.

If you are reading in Plain Text, turn it off and see if the paper clip goes
away. Otherwise, turn off e-mail scanning. I use AVG free and did the custom
download and unchecked e-mail scanning. It doesn't matter what program you
use, it causes problems.

This is from Symantic, but applies to all anti-virus programs.

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Thanks again, Bruce.

The paper clip appears when 'Read in plain text' is on and also off. It
still appears with AVG disabled.
Go figure!

As I said , it only occurs in messages from my friend. I suspect it is
something on her end.

I believe it must be on the other end also.
