I can receive mail from all my accounts. Interestinglingly I can send mail
with with my hotmail HTTP account but can't send with my Hotmail POP3 account. I get the error message: The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'POP3', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E I tried deleting the POP3 account and making a new one but this did not solve the problem. I have set Norton not to scan incoming or outgoing messages. According to the archives http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp The problem seems to be "The client connects to a port that is blocked or unavailable on the mail server. If the client is trying to send a message, the blocked port is 25" However the other two mail accounts in OE6 also use port 25 to send mail and don't have any problem. Does anyone know if Hotmail are experiencing problems with their SMTP outgoing mail server? Could it be that my POP3 settings are not correct? I am using the settings below: Your help and suggestions would be appreciated Kind Regards Chris Advanced tab: Outgoing mail SMTP 25 tick this server requires secure connection SSL Incoming POP3 995 (does not work with port 110) tick this server requires secure connection SSL Server timeouts 1 minute short Sending dont tick break apart messages larger than 60 KB OE6 Settings- General Tab: Name server pop3.live.com Tick include this account when receiving mail or syncronizing Servers Tab: Incoming: pop3.live.com Outgoing: smtp.live.com Tick remenber password Dont tick log on using secure Password Tick outgoing server required authentication under settings Logon info Dont tick log on using secure Password authentication Connection Tab: Tick nothing Security tab Algorithm: 3DES |

Try changing the Outgoing (SMTP) Port to 587, as your ISP may be blocking
Port 25. Thanks very much PA Bear, this solved the issue for me. I had recently
changed my ISP and never suspected this issue. By the way I apologise for the triple posts of the same question but every time I tried to post I got an error message that said something like there was a problem posting and please try later the error has been reported . Also it took me three times to try and reply to this thread. I don't know why. Is there a problem with the newsgroups page I wonder or perhaps my IE settings are at issue? Kind Regards Chris "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: Try changing the Outgoing (SMTP) Port to 587, as your ISP may be blocking Port 25. If you access this and other MS newsgroups via the free MS newsserver in OE,
you won't encounter such problems, Chris. (What you describe has been a problem for well over a week when posting via the web-interface. MS is aware of the problem but hasn't done bupkiss about it yet.) Setting up Outlook Express to access Microsoft newsgroups http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/ou...snewreader.htm -- OE-specific newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...xpress.general =link will open in OE! ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 Chris wrote: Thanks very much PA Bear, this solved the issue for me. People who use newsreaders, instead of web browsers, aren't having that problem. It is a problem with the web interface to the newsgroups; a problem that is only encountered by people using a web browser. I don't know that there is anything that you can do with a browser to fix the problem. The groups are actually hosted on NNTP servers, and HTTP access requires some kind of funky kludge. When it doesn't work, all bets are off. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
