This seems to only be happening in help_and_support newsgroup.
When I look at the pull down for all my newsgroups it shows a large number
of unread messages but when I open newsgroup it only shows about the
expected normal amount. A example is that at 9 today I showed 1446 since
last night but only say about 30 or so, I marked all read and clicked catch
up, now shows blank.
45 minutes later it already shows 43 messages but there are only 4. I am set
to read only unread but have cleared "catch up" repeatably. "anyone see 43
in past 45 minutes?"
This just started happening a few days ago and only in this one newsgroup
which I believe eliminates rules. All my rules are universal and not new.
Thoughts?

Try resetting the newsgroup.

While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked.

Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right
click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset.
Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be
downloaded again.

Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group,
or server at the top and then Reset.

It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE
check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: "
Include this account...........".

Thank you Bruce, that seems to have done it.
Now off to seek help with new problem probably also caused when I used WM
tools to clone new boot drive.
My thanks to other replies as well.

Here's a much better solution:

"Accessing Microsoft Newsgroups with Outlook Express"
http://www.gmayor.com/MSNews.htm

telnet
group microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
211 9705 824830 853649 microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
/telnet

So, it would be 9705 now.
Is that newsgroup being spammed?
MS deletes spam which could create holes in the sequence
and perhaps that procedure doesn't always correct the estimate.

Notice that the total number of slots implied by the response
is 853649 - 824830 = 28819
so there must be a lot of holes or at least major gaps skipped
when OE would do its initial XOVER 824830-853649
(assuming you don't have Get xxx headers at a time
checked.)

Turn on troubleshooting logging for news if you want
to see the real exchange (not just my guesses of it.) ; )

Good luck
