[No takers under IE6 group]
Experiencing hold ups and shut down hangs when IE is opened from within OE or O. In Outlook the result is that a version of IE remains in programmes in Process Explorer after it has been supposedly shut down - presumably shutting the version that opens as a service from within O leaves the other one incompletely shut down. This is accompanied by a 'closing programme autocomplete' message that prevents shutdown, when O has been used as the mail handler. When OE is used as the mail handler IE still opens as a service, rather than the programme itself, from links in mails. The 'service IE' tends to search for ages, or even hang over the links. However, if the programme IE itself is opened first, they go through OK - though the service version still runs. I have noted the mail on a similar topic below, and had a look at the files/open with. In our case (XP Pro) the URL file type was set to open with "Shell Doc Object & Control Library" (?) However, resetting this to IE still opens it as a service and it still takes ages. What is going on? Cheers, S |

Thanks Bruce,
Looks as though my virgin server must be playing up again. The message has not appeared in OE and is not responding to 'get next headers'. I already went through a lot of hassle when virgin's server for Usenet seemed to be very selective about what it would accept and download. Looks like I may have to start over again! I already have two lots of microsoft public groups in my file tree... Grr! Cheers, S "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... You got a reply in the IE6 group from PA Bear 21 hours ago. If you're having a problem with a specific group, reset it.
While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and Group Messages By Conversation are checked. Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset. Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be downloaded again. Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group, or server at the top and then Reset. It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: " Include this account...........". -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "spamlet" wrote in message ... Checked for PA Bear's note on web [and note that I could not copy and paste
it from there...], currently running the MSRT as suggested, on full scan. Does the regular download of this tool that runs without showing a screen, only do basic scans? I do regularly scan with antispyware progs and have TeaTimer and Avast running all the time, and do all the updates as they come in from MS - bar SP3 at the mo, but I'm working up to it... It would be handy if this was all due to some infection and I could expect a great improvement after routing it out, but I would have thought it would have shown up if any of these progs are any good.
