I should have asked this question a couple of hours ago.
Alas, I outsmarted myself and messed up. Later today, I'll be moving from dial-up to cable internet, yes,I finally yelled Uncle! Well, Comcast no longer has a news server, so I felt that the groups that I followed via my current ISP's news server, should now be followed at news.motzarella.org. So, I tried to be clever, and change the account to point to news.motzarella.org. I immediately lost most of the subscriptions. Then I fiddled a bit more and lost all the subscriptions. I did do a backup last night, so tried restoring the drive on which I thought the OE stuff lived. That did not do the job. I could restore the OS drive as well, but that might modify changes I made today. I'll just have to look at a backup from a few daze ago to get a list of the subscriptions, and enter them manually. What should I have done? I still have another account to move to news.motzarella.org. -- http://www.standards.com/; See Howard Kaikow's web site. |

If you were moving to a different newsreader, (i.e. from OE to Agent), you
could export and import the server settings, but going to a different newsreader, AFAIK, you need to start from scratch. The groups themselves don't export nor import in any situation. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "Howard Kaikow" wrote in message ... You cannot "preserve" newsgroup posts between newsservers, Howard. You'll
just have to (1) remove the old News Account, (2) add the new one, (3) re-subscribe to your newsgroups, and (4) download available messages. Tools | Options | Read | Get XXX headers at a time The default is 300. You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in Folders pane | Synchronization Settings | select New Messages Only. Now every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the next-newest set of headers/messages.. When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded. Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely; then compact the folder. From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server since you last checked (polled) for messages. You should probably visit this page, too: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#cleannews (lotsa good stuff there). -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Howard Kaikow wrote: I should have asked this question a couple of hours ago.
