Default Outlook Express 6 e-mail messages are missing from the Inbox folde

The other day I realized that messages dated from the end of 2005 until the
end of May 2009 were missing from my Inbox. All old messages in all of my
other folders including sent are still there. I didn't compact anything
(knowingly) and I have the view set to show all messages. I don't know of
anything that I may have done to cause this. I use Norton antivirus and also
have system mechanic software installed that performs regular scans. My ISP
provides McAfee but I don't believe it's running on my computer. Can anyone
tell me what process to use to restore these emails without going to any
expense if possible? Thank you!!

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

...I use Norton antivirus

Is your subscription current? When does it expire?

My ISP provides McAfee but I don't believe it's running on my computer.

Find out.

I also have system mechanic software installed that performs regular
scans.

Ugh. If you think your Registry needs to be "cleaned" or "repaired," read

WinXP is not your full Windows version. Pick one: WinXP (no Service Packs);
WinXP SP1; WinXP SP2; WinXP SP3

To check, right-click on My Computer & select Properties: The full version
will be listed on the resulting General tab.

If McAfee Security Center (or, possibly, Verizon/Yahoo Security Center) or
anything else named McAfee is listed in Add/Remove Programs, the McAfee
application is installed.

Sammie

Is there any evidence of folder corruption? Using Windows XP you
need to enable show hidden files. Start, Control Panel, Folder
Options, View, Advanced Settings. Next enter Windows Explorer.
Using Tools, Find, Files and Folders search your C drive with
"inbo*.dbx" without quotes as the search criteria and see if you can
find more than one folder. Note the date / time stamp on the files
and the older folder will contain your missing messages. The
original inbox will appear as inbox. dbx. The next as inbox (01) dbx,
then inbox (02) dbx etc. The file extension can also appear as .dbt
i.e. a temporary folder.

Default Outlook Express 6 e-mail messages are missing from the Inbox folde / OT / registry cleaners

Incredible advice. I have been running PC Tools Registry Mechanic weekly,
thinking that by removing broken links and the like I am doing the registry
(and myself) a favour.

Apparently not.

Looks like I should leave well alone!
