Outlook Express won't access friends's Hotmail; etc. ---------------------------------------------------- Win XP Pro SP2, Word 2003, Outlook Express version 6.0... --------------------------------------------------------- Know very little about OE and 'e-mail clients', et. al. The 'HELP' wasn't much help. Couldn't get it to work. Couple days later realized that since I was already on a permanent Internet line, there was no need to "log in" to any "Service Provider Account" (as w/ "dial-up") and as intimated by OE. Once I realized this, all went well. I set up O.E. and logged in OK using "hotmail.com" and my hotmail password, all the way. Half an hour later, when I tried to set up O.E. for my friend and his Hotmail account, this is what I got: ---------------------------------------- Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email Configuration: Account: Hotmail Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp User name: Protocol: HTTPMail Port: 0 ---------------------------------------- Please visit " http://www.hotmail.com/oe " to learn more. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCCF6 ---------------------------------------- The only difference between us is that he's got a newer, 250 MB Hotmail acct, while mine is still the old 2 MB type. The information in the link seems to imply that sooner or later (or maybe even already), there won't be any more access possible to hotmail via other e-mail clients (like Eudora?), either - unless maybe these are modified - since the required protocol will only be retained in Hotmail.plus (subscription). The link page was last updated on November 11, 2004. ---------------------------------------- I'd like to try setup O.E. to access a "yahoo.com" and/or "Lycos.com" e-mail account ("other"), but then must know name of their POP3, IMAP or HTTP Server. How to get that? and is it possible? Could I access all 3 accounts via "Eudora" or something similar? In sum: (1) Why was I able to access Hotmail via Outlook Express, but not my friend? (2) Is it possible for OE to access non-MSN email accounts? How? (3) Any other type e-mail clients around that could emulate OE, +++ ? Any info greatly appreciated. --- Ted... |
