Deleted items.dbx could be corrupted.
Move any items that you want to keep out of Deleted Items.
Close OE.
Delete Deleted items.dbx. (or move deleted item.dbx out of the OE store
folder)

Compact as follows and you'll see the dbx files reduce in size.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything
until the compacting is completed.

How can I clean up all of the content of the dbx files? I know, I could
dispose of the deleted files by deleting the dbx folder. OE will then
make a new deleted folder when I open up OE the next time. But, I do not
want to delete the Inbox folder or the Sent Items Folder because I lose
all recent messages.
