Default Outlook Crashes on Startup

Have brand new install of WinXP Home with SP2 and all updates.
Office 2003 with SP2 installed. Antivirus software uninstalled
to remove the possibility of it interfering with Outlook.
Tested in safe mode and every other time it does startup
succesfully and then hangs(spalsh screen is still displayed). No Add-ins are
enabled.
Tried repairing and reinstalling Outlook to no avail.
Every other time get an error message about extend.dat
(Can't open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may
not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program.
Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click Properties
to check your permissions for the folder) Tried deleting
the file and also making sure that Everyone group has permissions to
the whole folder and files. The only entry in event viewer is EvenID:2002
(The MOF file created for the Outlook service could not be loaded.
The error code returned by the MOF Compiler is contained in the
Record Data. Before the performance counters of this service can
be collected by WMI the MOF file will need to be loaded manually.
Contact the vendor of this service for additional information. )

The only clue that I can see is the pst file itself. It's in outlook 2003
format and is only 1Gb in size
which is well below the limit. I tried running scanpst.exe on it and it did
find 15 errors but fixed them.
However, the Outlook hanging still persists. What other repair utilities are
there for pst files.?
If no repair utility works, and assuming the problem is with pst file, what
do I do to fix the situation.
Can I create an empty pst file and then drag and drop all the emails from
the corrupted one?

In Exchange there is an utility Exmerge which will automatically drop
corrupted messages. Unfortunatelly
we don't have exchange on site and use pop/smtp.

Thanx a million for all the wonderful replies.

Try creating a new mail profile - it will probably fix whatever is causing
Outlook to hurl. If you want to find what is causing the problem without a
new mail profile, start Outlook in safe mode.

start-run=outlook.exe /safe If you can get it to open with hurling, then
find and rename extend.dat with Outlook closed.

Reopen Outlook normally and see what shows up under Help-Disabled Items.
You have probably found your cause.

well, that is the weird thing. sometimes it opens in safe mode and sometimes
not.
This crashing thing happens only every other time. I'm not sure what to make
of it.
Ill try your suggestion though.
