Default How can get e-mails not to automatically show up opened

I bet you know what version of Outlook you are using.
No one else does and would need to if you want an answer.
You need to determine the formats to which "Charter.net" can export its
address book--another thing we could not guess.

Goto View Menu

View - Reading Pane - Off

File menun

File - Import and Export ... Follow instructions.

The Reading Pane is a feature new to Outlook 2003, which is why Russ asked
for the OP's Outlook version number.
