Hi.
I'm a new user to Outlook and I'm having a heck of a time. I have synced my Palm with Outlook, so I know there's data on my computer that I should be able to access. I opened Outlook, and there is no data in there. When I go to open a Personal Folder, it asks me to browse for the data. I searched my computer and found one large PST file (my palm data, I'm assuming), but there's no Outlook or Palm logo associated with it. I try to open it, and it asks me which program to open it with. Microsoft Outlook is NOT on that list! Even though it's on my desktop and in my All Programs list, and I can launch it easily, I cannot find it when I go to open this PST file. HELP ME PLEASE!!! I AM SO FRUSTRATED!!! Thank you ![]() schmilary |

Hi Alan,
It is definitely Microsoft Outlook. Icon is gold colored Microsoft square- like excel is green. Tried exporting from Outlook and it said that my import/export drivers weren't installed. I put in the Microsoft Office 2000 Professional install disk, re-installed Outlook, and it STILL wouldn't export-- giving me the same message... I'm baffled. Hi Brian.
Thank you for attempting to help me. SO, to clear things up a bit here's the deal. I'm attempting to consolidate all of my contact information into Microsoft Outlook. I am able to sync my Palm to Outlook as well as the Palm Desktop using the software provided with my Palm Zire 72. As it stands right now, I chose Outlook because Outlook is theoretically able to export to an Excel file, which is the format I ultimately need to have all of my contacts consolidated into. Why? I am going to upload it to an FTP server database, which will be ready in two weeks. While beginning the process, I've hit several brick walls. I have synced my Palm with Outlook, but the data doesn't present itself when I open the program. I searched my computer for the data using the Outlook extension .pst and found one result with the search. The file size was about as large as I'd expect it to be given the number of contacts in my palm, but the icon associated with the file is a non-proprietary icon. What does this mean??? You know when you have, say, a .jpeg file but the file extension hasn't been attached to the file name? The icon representing the .jpeg basically looks like a blank white internet explorer window only tiny? THEN, when you add the .jpeg etension to the file name and suddenly the icon changes and you can tell that it is a the .jpeg simply by the icon appearance? Same with a word doc... Anyway, if I double click on the file in my search results, a dialogue box opens up and says it doesn't know which app to use to open the file and asks if I want to search the web to find an appropriate app or if I want to search a list of available apps on my computer. I have selected both options in this effort. With the web search, it tells me to open it with Microsoft Outlook. When I try to go to a list of available apps on my computer, Microsoft Outlook does not appear. AAAARGH!!! I've tried searching my computer for the app to no avail. Having given up on that for the moment, I figured I'd work on something else. I tried to do the basic importing and exporting to and from Outlook. I will have to do this alot in the next couple of weeks. Upon attempting to export, I received an error message saying that the import/export drivers are not installed and would I like to install them now? I say yes, it says I need a disk, I insert the disk that I have for Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, and select Outlook to re-install. It does it's thing, and seems to be installing. I repeat my exporting effort, and again get the message that my drivers are not installed. HELP!!! EVERYTHING I TRY TO DO FAILS!!! Thanks again ![]() schmilary "Brian Tillman" wrote: schmilary wrote: I have synced my Palm with Outlook, so I know there's data on my computer that I should be able to access. If you have one mail profile, that mail profile will have a default message store and the sync software will use that message store. Outlook will too. It can't use any other. If you have more than one profile, you have not selected a default profile, and none are active when you sync, you'll be prompted for which profile to use. Outlook will do the same. That profile will have a default message store and both Outlook and the sync software will use it. It can't do anything else. If you have more than one mail profile and you've select a default profile, then you'll have the same conditions as occur with a single profile. It is impossible for anything else to occur. Normal. You shouldn't be opening PSTs from Windows Explorer. Having given up on that for the moment, I figured I'd work on something else. I tried to do the basic importing and exporting to and from Outlook. Never import from a PST. You lose data and there is no need. I will have to do this alot in the next couple of weeks. Hi Brian.
Thank you again. I re-synced my palm to outlook while outlook was open, and it worked. My data came in. As far as importing and exporting is concerned, I was not trying to import from or export to a PST file. I was simply trying to open the file not import. As for exporting, I was trying to export to Excel or a Tab Separated Value and I get an error message which says the import/export engines are not installed and asks if I want to install them now. I have learned that I apparently have two versions of Microsoft Office loaded on my computer: Office 2000 Professional and Office 2000 Small Business. I only have the discs for the Professional version, and it is asking for the Small Business version... I cannot export. I would also still like to know why Outlook doesn't appear in my program application list... aaargh! Thanks so much, schmilary "Brian Tillman" wrote: schmilary wrote: I have synced my Palm with Outlook, but the data doesn't present itself when I open the program.
