Default How do I expand messages in Unread Mail search folder?

I use a search folder to identify unread mail that has been moved into
nested local folders by my rules.

Previously, when I displayed the Unread Mail pane, I would see all the
unread messages in groups, with headers indicating their folder.

Something has changed, and now the messages in each folder group are
collapsed. I have to click on a little "+" box in the header to expand
each folder's messages and make them visible.

Where is the setting that controls the display as a collapesed tree? I
would like to have the messages always display in an expanded form, and
not have to manually expand the messages for each folder.

it's under grouping in the view configuration - click on the row of field
names and choose Custom, then grouping.
