Default Address Book Hangs for about a minute

When I select a new messafge and the word editor opens and I then click the
'To' my address book opens and I go to type a nam BUT the field isn't active
for about a minute and will not allow any entry to the field then it seems to
be OK - what is happenig?? This is more often than not - other times it is OK
and I can type straight away??
