It indicates the number of new, unread items are in your calendar. Are you

I'm not sharing my calendar with anyone and I'm not on a network. I do sync
my PDA with Outlook. Is there any way to locate the "new items"?

either use advanced find to search for unread messages, switch to a table
view (by categories works well) so you can spot the bolded messages or just
right click on the folder and choose 'mark all as read'.
