why do I have to click send/recieve for e-mails to display

Default why do I have to click send/recieve for e-mails to display

when I open Outlook and go into my inbox only the e-mails I already opened
display. I have to click on send/receive in the toolbar to get any new
unopened e-mails to display. Can I fix this so I do not have to perform that
step?
