Default preventing winword from opening

When ever I forward a document in Outlook 2003 it wants to open
Winword and from the time I click forward to the time I can type
something in, it takes approx 20 seconds before I can type something.
Why does winword have to open and can I prevent it from opening.

Thanks,
Pete
