Many users have complained about this. When opening a Word e-mail attachment
the entire Word program is opened. Sometimes a viewer is opened on top of
Word and when you close it Word is there with the file. Other times it just
opens it in Word. Where are these options? I thought
Help...Privacy...Options...Attachments Handling...Attachment and Document
Previewers uncheck the Word options would change the behavior but it didn't.

Version of Outlook and Word?

Is it word's reading layout? To disable it, open Word's Tools, Options,
General tab and uncheck the option to start with the reading layout.

Thank you for your reply. I should have indicated it was Outlook and Word
2007. There are alot of changes with 2007. One way we have found to make
users happy is in Outlook 2007 go to Help...Privacy Options...Attachment
Handling...Uncheck attachment preview. Close Outlook then reopen. Now your
e-mails with attachments will have a Message icon next to your attachments.
You can double click the attachment to open it in Word or right click it to
just view the attachment. It's not the true "viewer" but it serves the same
purpose. Thanks again for your help.

I think this answers my original question. Of course I went the long way
around to find it......

There are options in the Viewer where you can turn off the viewer opening on
top of word. Since you have the new configuration Glen found to get the
viewer back open your Word attachment in the e-mail then go to view…full
screen viewing…View Options on the right hand top side…Uncheck Don’t Open
Attachments in Full Screen. Unchecking it will open viewer first like you had
before. So when you reopen the word attachment this time you will have a
message box that lets you turn off opening attachments here or not to see the
error message again which pretty much brings up viewer every time.
