Did you install the Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint 2007?

Default I'VE GOT OFFICE 2003 WHY CAN'T I OPEN OFFICE 2007 FILES

As Neo stated, you need to install the Office Compatibility Pack. By
default, MS Word 2007 will save the documents as .docx and MS Excel 2007
will save the files as .xlsx.....

Or one can just Save As and specify the older version.
