Helo all,
I have just bought a Vista Home Premium pc (philips freevents LX3000) and am using Office 2003. My problem is this: While using the same office app' on Win XP Home Ed' SP2 I backed up all my Outlook 2003 personal folders for both pop3 and IMAP accounts by using import/export to a .pst file and placed these files on two external hard drives, just for safety reasons in case one of the external hard drives would not work with vista. Both of the external hard drives and their 'names' are recognised by vista and I can see and access almost all of the files on both drives. I have even been able to change the drive letter of the Vista pc's DVD rewriter from the original E:\ to D:\ so that the external hard drives can have the same drive letters on both pc's (E and F, rather than D and F on Vista, and E and F on XP). The files that have the problems are the .pst files on both of the external drives because when I try to import these .pst files back into their 'original' folders in Outlook 2003 (on the Vista pc) using the same method I used to export them (from the XP pc), I get an annoying pop up message stating that I do not have 'permission' to import these files, with no explanation that I can understand as to why and what to do to remedy this problem. Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks, Rob |

If you had read any of the posts here you would know that you should never
use export to create a PST file. If you exported directly to another drive you very likely corrupted them. Did you back up your data before you did this? Have you tried repairing these files with the Inbox Repair Tool? Have you moved these files to your local hard drive and tried to open them? Note: Do not touch the import command. Just try to open the files after you move and repair them. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "TufftyBob" wrote in message ... As it happens I actually do READ POSTS FIRST, before I ask any questions. I
always check between 10 and 20 pages of posts, or even more if I have the time. This problem I have noticed has only happened since I bought my Vista pc a few days ago and I never had any similar problems importing and exporting the exact same .pst files to the exact same external hard drive, from exactly the same folders containg the exact same account e-mails - whether IMAP or pop3. The only difference is the fact that I have now tried to to the same thing using Outlook 2003 on a Vista pc rather than Outlook 2002 on an XP Home Edition sp2 pc. I had no idea that according to yourself and quite few others that this isn't particularly reccommended as I was able to do it many times before without any problems, so would not have had any reason to go to microsoft communities to ask how to sort a problem that had not even happened yet would I !!? After all isn't it usually the thing that some people come to these pages for help AFTER a problem has happened, rather than before. In my case I have been coming to these pages for quite a while and have found answers to problems that have actually happened to me quite some time after reading about the solution, as well as tried to offer answers to other people who like me have a 'new' problem to which they have no answer or solution. Anyway thanks for your input. Perhaps someone else who might have read my post knows the answer even if you don't - you may have already given me the 'right' answer, but I did not really understand what you said about the Inbox Repair Tool as I did not know that this tool existed untill you mentioned it, never mind how to use it. Short of telling me that I should not have used import/export your answer did not help me much but thankyou anyway. Then why not just ask for the additional information you need instead of
assuming I did not give you the "right answer?" We have no way of knowing what you know to do and what you don't know. The answer remains that this is far more likely to be a file corruption issue than a Vista "file permissions" issue. Accordingly, the first steps in solving your problem remain: 1. Determining whether you made a valid backup of your data (i.e., where you copied your data file instead of exporting it). 2. Moving the file you made onto your current drive, then trying to repair it with the Inbox Repair Tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227/en-us 3. Trying to open this file in your current installation of Outlook: File Open Outlook data file. We'll need the results of these steps before we can proceed further. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "TufftyBob" wrote in message ...
