outlook closes when trying to send email

Something else to check is your service pack level. You can get this information from Help/About as well. If the service pack level (SP1, SP2, SP3) isn't displayed explicitly, note the build level, then Google Office XP [build_level]. You should see some results indicating which service pack is installed.
