Default Outlook 97 help needed

Cross-posting to several lists, hoping to find some help:

I have had to reinstall Outlook 97 after uninstalling it some time ago.
I'm having problems connecting to my email account.

I have set up a profile called Outlook97. In this profile, I've set up
my gmail account with all the ports correctly configured. In Outlook
97, I've set this profile to be the default. But when I try to check
for mail, I get a box with only the Fax transport service listed.

I've downloaded the Internet email patch, but it doesn't seem to make
much difference.

I'm using WinXP, SP2. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Even with IMEP, Outlook 97 did not have full support for Internet Mail
transports. Explain why you think Outlook 97 could support a gmail account
and what protocol you are using.

Well, Gmail requires SSL and setting the ports appropriately. Outlook
97 does both of these things.

As far as protocol, I'm not sure what you mean. My gmail account is a
pop3 account, supported by Outlook.

Your first comment may explain it all to me. If full support is not
given, even though I can set up my gmail account correctly, then perhaps
I need to move on.

Thanks.

There are still lots of features not supported that gmail might require,
like authentication for example.

Thanks, I think you're right. I'm going to move on from trying to get
Outlook 97 to work.

Looks instead like you multiposted.

Unfortunately, Outlook 97 cannot be used with gmail. Gmail requires SMTP
authentication and Outlook 97 is not capable of that.

I posted to one newsgroup originally, and got no response. I re-posted
to two newsgroups, hoping to find an answer. This request did not go
out blindly, only to those groups where help might be found.

Yuck. Thanks, just what I needed to know. I do appreciate your help on
this.
