Default Viewing all documents in Outlook

"One view to rule them all" ... I had the same question and your suggestion
works. But I would like to see an icon next to each email to indicate if it
was a sent or received item.

You could create a search folder that includes your Inbox (and any
subfolders) as well as your Sent Items folder. Group it by date or by
conversation.

I would like the ability to be able to view all the emails that I sent
and
received in one view, sorted by date.
This would enable me to work out what I'd done on a particular day.
Is this something that's already in Outlook, but I can't find it, or
will I
have to write a solution?

What version of Outlook are you running and what mode (Corp/Workgroup,
Internet Mail Only, etc.) do you have it installed in? If you're not
sure, check Help | About.

Well, the names of the folders in which the messages reside are included in
the display, so icons to indicate that are unneeded.
