Out of the clear blue (Outlook 2003), all my emails were out of order. I
went to the custom box and selected what I wanted so that the From box is
first, Subject second etc. However, there is now a grey box above where it
says From, Subject etc with the date in a grayed out box. How do I get rid
of this box - it was not there before nor does it appear in my other mail
boxes....

You clicked a column header other than "Received" and Outlook sorted ont he
column you clicked.

Right-click the header line above the message list and uncheck "Group By
Box". Now, click ViewArrange ByCurrent ViewReset Current View and see it
it looks the way you want it.
