Default Outlook won't default as mail program

I've gone into options and clicked on make outlook the default mail program,
but it still won't send/receive mail.
I've been using Express, but I want to try Office Outlook.
I'm running XP, and Office 2003.

Did you install your mail account(s) in Outlook? What happened when you used the Test Account Settings option? What error messages did you receive?

After furious head scratching, I asked:

Milly, yes I have installed my accounts on Outlook, using the same settings
as in Express.
The message I get when I use test account settings" is "unable to send test
message, please verify the email address field"
In the test account task window, I see four green checked tasks, but the
last one is the error (send test message).

Did you verify you are using the correct syntax for your email address per the ISP's instructions?
