Default How Many Address Books Does Outlook Have?

One thing I have difficulty with in Outlook is terminology. It seems there are many different things that have very similar names.

I successfully migrated from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook 2002. My Outlook Express Address Book (.wab) was imported into something called Contacts in Outlook. My Outlook Address Book is empty.
The MS Office web site also discusses something called a Personal Address Book. I would like some clarity, please.

1- What is the difference between Contacts, the Outlook Address Book and the Personal Address Book?

2- Where is the best place for me to store my e-mail addresses? (All I want to store are email addresses and distribution lists. I don't care about people's birthdays, web sites, cell phone numbers, etc.)

3- Can I delete my .wab now that I've switched to Outlook?

If there's a web page that answers my questions (and is not written in Microsoft-ese) I'll appreciate that too.

Thanks for your help.

1. Contacts is your address list - in the paper world, its your little black
book.
Outlook Address Book is a virtual address book that had only electronic
addresses in it. It contains all of the address lists in your profile. In
the paper world, it's a shoe box or desk drawer where you throw envelopes,
business cards, the black book, and other sources of addresses. When you
need an address, you go there to find it.
Personal Address Book is like contacts but is no longer supported. Don't
even think about using it.

2. In Outlook you have one choice - contacts. When you address email, you'll
use the Outlook Address Book to find the addresses in the contacts.

3. You can, but I would keep it at least for a few months.

Default How Many Address Books Does Outlook Have?

Thank you! I'm making a copy of this thread for future reference.

Just to make sure I really understand what you explained about the Outlook Address Book being a "virtual address book that ha[s] only electronic addresses in it": My Contacts contains the full set of details about my correspondants whereas the Outlook Address Book has only their e-mail data (Name, Display Name, Address, Type). Correct?

Last question, mostly out of interest: In the "Address Book" when I select "Show Names from the:" and select Outlook Address Book, why does the Address Book say "No entries in this Address Book"?

Thanks for clearing things up.

1. yes, the contacts has the full details, the outlook address book displays
just the electronic address info.

2. when you open the desk drawer, you need to select a book biz card to get
an address... the address book listing when you hit To is the same way. It's
just the container and you need to select the contents to view addresses.

FWIW, you really don't need to use the To field if you know who you want to
send to - just type all or part of their name and outlook will find and
resolve the name for you.
