I have been having trouble with the .pst, particularly when emptying
the recycle bin.

I ran scanpst against the .pst file, and in Phase 1 of 8, an error
message pops up:
"An unexpected error prevented access to the file. Use a disk error
checking program to check the disk, and then try using the Microsoft
Office Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair tool again."

I ran chkdsk in safe mode, but scanpst aborted at the same place.

My approach to solving this would be to create a new PST, make it the
delivery location (if the PST with the problem is currently the delivery
location), then copy the contents of the old PST to the new one, and
finally, close the old one in Outlook to remove it from the mail profile.
