Outlook 2003
XP All was working well until I switched to AT&T U-Verse (my mistake). The change to their new POP3 mail servers has caused the following condition: Junk mail is received and displayed in the "junk e-mail" folder. Regular email does not appear at all, yet it can be found received on the web mail browser. Their tech support seems to be at a loss and started finger pointing. Any help here will be much appreciated. |

Do you have any rules enabled that could be moving things around? Are you
receiving any errors when the send/receive process completes? "Sid9" wrote in message ... Outlook 2003 XP All was working well until I switched to AT&T U-Verse (my mistake). I removed all rules trying to troubleshoot this
issue. There are no errors in the send / receive process. Thanks for the response! "Vince Averello" wrote in message ... Do you have any rules enabled that could be moving things around? Do you have more than one set of Personal Folders (PST)? Wonder if the mail
is moving elsewhere? "Sid9" wrote in message ... I removed all rules trying to troubleshoot this issue. There are no errors in the send / receive process. |

The change to their new POP3 mail servers has caused the following condition: Junk mail is received and displayed in the "junk e-mail" folder. So if there was a "change", what was the behavior BEFORE for received junk mails? POP has no concept of folders. It only understands the concept of a single mailbox (with no folders). The server-side Inbox folder you see in the webmail interface is the mailbox that a POP e-mail client can see. So POP has nothing to do with the Junk folder in your e-mail account. It will retrieve no items from there. That folder (and all others than the Inbox) do not exist as far as the POP client is concerned. There are no commands in POP to select folders because POP doesn't handle folders. So something ELSE is putting e-mails into the Junk folder in Outlook. That could be Outlook's junk filtering, blocked senders list, or some anti-spam software that you installed. Regular email does not appear at all, yet it can be found received on the web mail browser. Did you check the view used for your Inbox folder in Outlook? Their tech support seems to be at a loss and started finger pointing. Did you create a new e-mail account in Outlook to match up with your new account at AT&T? Or did you edit an old and existing account in Outlook to make it use different mail hosts and login credentials? Did you define a POP or IMAP account in Outlook? If IMAP, does AT&T support IMAP? |

So if there was a "change", what was the behavior BEFORE for received junk mails? Junk mail was redirected to the "Junk email" folder New mail has been received into that folder today POP has no concept of folders. I've removed all junk filtering, blocked senders entries or anti-spam software that I am aware of. At this writing I am deleting some software that YAHOO installed during AT & T's installation. I have deleted it via Control panel add/remove programs. The program still remains in my c:\program files\YAHOO directory and requires a reboot. At the conclusion of my reply to you I will reboot and manually delete the files. The executables are Ymailcfg.exe , ymmapi.exe, and ysctr.exe. I don't know their function. As far as I'm concerned they are uninvited guests. I have cancelled their U-Verse serve...I should be restored (I hope) in about seven days Regular email does not appear at all, yet it can be found received on the web mail browser. Did you check the view used for your Inbox folder in Outlook? The view used has not changed. The junk email folder previews the email in that folder just fine Their tech support seems to be at a loss and started finger pointing. Did you create a new e-mail account in Outlook to match up with your new account at AT&T? Or did you edit an old and existing account in Outlook to make it use different mail hosts and login credentials? Yes. The POP mail servers changed from mail.mia.bellsouth.net to pop.att.yahoo.com and smtp.att.yahoo.com. In addition the default POP3 mail ports were changed to 995 and 465 respectively. SSL encryption was required to be checked Did you define a POP or IMAP account in Outlook? If IMAP, does AT&T support IMAP? I don't know if ATT supports IMAP. I followed the instruction they gave me for setting up their email account. Again...thank you for your response! |

I have cancelled their U-Verse serve...I should be restored (I hope) in about seven days I doubt very much if your issue was affected by Uverse. This issue can occur no matter what Internet connection you have. Your PC certainly doesn't care. What may be different, however, is that Uverse employs a router/gateway and not simply a modem. That can change the approach you take for network connections. Also, there was no requirement for you to install the "uninvited guests" and since you installed them, they weren't uninvited. I have AT&T services and I install only what I want. I don't blindly stick a CD in my PC and let it install whatever the script dictates. There's no need for that and, frankly, the fewer extras you have installed and the simpler the network configuration, the better you'll be when trying to diagnose problems. Yes. SSL encryption was required to be checked This is a requirement for many ISPs now. The use of port 25 for SMTP is much less frequent that it was and it's a good thing. But the port really makes no difference to how the mail flows in or out. I don't know if ATT supports IMAP. I followed the instruction they gave me for setting up their email account. It doesn't. Have you tried starting Outlook in safe mode to see if that makes a difference? StartRunoutlook.exe /safe (mind the space in from of "/safe"). -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

When you say "sent a test message" did you just "send a message" or did you use the "Test Account Settings" function in the Email Account setup dialog box? -- Asking a question?
