Default can't delete messages in OL2000

Beginning today I can't delete any messages in OL2000. I get the message
"The messaging interdace has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook." Restarting OL had no effect. Neither did
rebooting the system (WinXP Home, latest updates to XP and Office), doing a
System Restore to before yesterday's MS auto update, disabling Norton
Internet Security 2005.

Any ideas? I'd rather not go through the hassle of uninstall/reinstall
Office 2000 if possible

Are you using a PST? What size is it?

Thanks for the quick response. Following your train of thought, I emptied
the Deleted Items folder in OL (I know, I said I couldn't delete any
messages, but I hadn't tried deleting these). Now I can delete messages at
will anywhere in OL. The PST was 389,000kB before emptying Deleted Items,
now the PST is 390,000kB.
