Default winword crashes when replying to email Outllok 2003

We have had this ongoing problem for several months now, when users reply or
create a new email outlook hangs. the only way to fix is to use task manager
a kill the winword process.

it then works fine for the rest of the day, and may happen once a week we
are running exchange 2003, and office 2003 all patched and up to date. there
is an abiguois entry in the event manager.

The following things have been tried to varying success with no common fix
for each user affected:
" Office Repair from add/remove
" Office Reinstall from add/remove
" Complete removal and reinstall of Office
" Detect and Repair from Office application
" Disabling of EVault Plugin
" Disabling of MessageSave Plugin
" Removal of SLR Default Template
" Re-profile of user

I have spent endless hours searching the internet and user groups for this
bug and have looked at site like Expert Exchange which have recommended the
above in one way or another. Microsoft themselves have confirmed this is a
bug which is present in Office XP/2003/2007 and their own fix is to kill the
WINWORD.exe process!

In Word, go to Tools - Autocorrect Options - Smart Tags
and deselect the Smart Tags option.

Let me know if that helps.

There is a problem with at least one smart tag that is installed by 3rd
party software that causes word to crash.
