How do I remove this from view? I don't use it and it is just taking up
space.

Switch to folder view - ctrl+6 or the folder button in the nav pane.

seems there's a fair few people who don't want this function. Did MS
actually do any consulting with "normal" users about this, or is this
another piece of MS "take it or leave it" arrogance?

But it seems they just "produced" Outlook 2003 with this un-turnoffable
function!

That's short correct ;-). You are able to switch to the folder view in
that the favorite folder does not appear ;-).

Natch, I know what you mean, but what are to do? To get upset also
doesn't help ;-).

Have a nice weekend!

they did focus groups and such but being a new feature, it was hard to get a
feeling for the degree to which people disliked it. It took me two weeks-
now i'm lost without it. But... I have a lot more folders than most of the
people who want to remove it.

It will be collapsible in Outlook 12. Until then, switch to the folder
list - many people who dislike the favs list also dislike the separate panes
for each items type and prefer the folder list view.
