Hi.
Using Office 2003 with Vista SP1 I backup all my Outlook folders in one "pst" file most months and call them "outlook-03-09" for March backup and so on each month. Today I created May backup "outlook-05-09" and tried deleted March file, it will not delete with Outlook running. So I closed Outlook. When I now start Outlook it looks for the deleted file and says default e-mail folders can not be found. So I have to restore for recycle bin and leave in folder. I like to delete old backups and just keep most recent. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks |

Because you failed to disconnect the file from the Outlook profile before
you deleted it. You must close any PST file from Outlook before you delete it from the hard drive. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Joe Bloggs" wrote in message ... Hi. Thanks. But how do I now get round this? I have just created a brand new
backup and I still have the same problem. I think I had closed it, surely by closing Outlook down you are closing the file? Sorry, novice here! "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... With what are you backing up the data file?
BTW a backup, today, of your data file will create a backup containg all data. You cannot do an incremental backup of the data file "Joe Bloggs" wrote in message ... Thanks. Right click on the pst in the folder list and choose Close. Outlook will
hold it open for up to 30 min - then you can move or delete it. -- Diane Poremsky [MVP - Outlook] Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com Outlook Tips by email: EMO - a weekly newsletter about Outlook and Exchange: You can access this newsgroup by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/office/comm...s/default.mspx or point your newsreader to msnews.microsoft.com. ... I think I had closed it, surely by closing Outlook down you are closing the file? You may be closing the file from a file system perspective, but you haven't removed the reference to the file from the mail profile. You can do that by right-clicking the root of the folder tree and selecting Close or by clicking FileData File Management and removing it there or by using the Data Files button in Mail applet in Control Panel to remove it. Once it's out of the mail profile, then you can delete it from disk. As far as Outlook is concerned right now, that file is still beinf referenced. Try to remove it with the Mail applet. If you can't you'll have to create a new mail profile. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

With what are you backing up the data file?
I'm simply using the import / export facility and saving everything I can into a PST file. Right click on the pst in the folder list and choose Close. Outlook will hold it open for up to 30 min - then you can move or delete it. Sorry if I'm stupid but I don't see a PST file in folder list First to admit I am totally confused my mail profiles etc .... Everything is working fine I am simply bugged by fact I can't romove old backup files Thanks "DL" wrote in message ... BTW a backup, today, of your data file will create a backup containg all data.
