![]() Whenever I start my PC and Windows XP boots up, when it comes to the login screen my account has "x unread messages" displayed next to it. I log in. I then start Outlook. Sure enough, x number of messages are downloaded. Does Outlook, before it's started and in the background, log into the POP server to scan the number of messages that are ready for retrieval? |

No, Outlook does not. The message at the login screen only displays the unread mails that already existing in your email client. To prevent displaying the number of unread messages google for "MessageExpiryDays". -- Best Regards Christian Goeller MVP - MS Outlook http://www.outlookfaq.net |

But when I turned it on this morning at the login screen it said "4 unread messages". And when I logged on and fired up Outlook, sure enough, it downloaded 4 new messages. That is, I watched it log in and retrieve the mail. |
